About Us

Energy for Alberta’s Future

At Apex Utilities, we’re preparing today for tomorrow’s energy needs. By exploring lower emissions fuels like renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen, we’re supporting Alberta’s transition to lower‑carbon energy while using infrastructure that already exists.

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

What is RNG?

Renewable natural gas (RNG) is pipeline-quality gas made from organic waste like food scraps, wastewater, manure, forestry waste, and landfill material. Raw biogas is captured from these waste sources and cleaned up so it can be injected into our pipelines — working exactly like conventional natural gas.

Why RNG Matters

  • Prevents methane emissions from organic wastes.
  • Works seamlessly with existing appliances and infrastructure.

Our Commitment

Canada’s natural gas industry has set an aspirational target to blend 10% RNG across the nation by 2030. Apex Utilities is preparing for RNG integration so customers can benefit from this sustainable energy source.

Hydrogen

What is Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is emerging as a critical pathway to reduce emissions, store renewable energy, and decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like heating to transportation. Hydrogen is safe, and versatile, and can be produced from several sources including natural gas.

Benefits of Hydrogen
  • Greens the gas supply – Up to 20% hydrogen blends can safely reduce GHG emissions while still using current natural gas appliances.
  • Uses existing infrastructure – existing natural gas systems can be used to transport hydrogen blends to help reduce Alberta’s emissions while avoiding new and costly construction.
  • Safe and reliable – hydrogen blends don’t impact energy quality or delivery.
  • Stores renewable energy – hydrogen can be used to store excess renewable electricity (power-to-gas).
Why Hydrogen Matters
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Compatible with current pipeline systems at blends up to 20%.
  • Backed by proven technologies in other markets.
Our Commitment

Hydrogen is emerging as a key part of Alberta and Canada’s energy strategy. Apex Utilities is exploring opportunities to safely deliver hydrogen through our system to support Alberta’s low‑carbon future.

Looking Ahead

Both RNG and hydrogen are essential in creating a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy mix for Alberta. Apex Utilities is committed to testing, preparing, and investing in these solutions to ensure customers continue to benefit from safe, reliable energy.
