Innovation That Drives Efficiency and Sustainability

At Apex Utilities, we’re always looking for smarter ways to work. By evaluating and adopting new technologies, we reduce costs, improve reliability, and deliver cleaner, more affordable energy to our customers.

Automated Meter Reading (AMR) by Plane

Innovation Highlights

Automated Meter Reading (AMR) by Plane

We use remote Automated Meter Reading (AMR) technology to collect meter data across Alberta by plane. This approach improves data accuracy, reduces operational costs and human error, and cuts vehicle-related emissions.

GPS-Enabled Plows

GPS-Enabled Plows

Our construction plows are now equipped with GPS that connects directly to our Geographic Information System (GIS). This enables real-time, three-dimensional mapping of pipe installations, improving data accuracy and lowering operational risk.

GPS-Connected Service Vehicles

GPS-Connected Service Vehicles

We’ve integrated GPS into our service fleet and dispatch system to ensure the nearest technician responds to each call. This minimizes response times and optimizes routing for greater efficiency and customer service.

Combined heat

Combined heat and power

We’ve installed a 1.5kW natural gas Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit at one of our operations buildings in Leduc. This technology simultaneously generates electricity and hot water using natural gas – achieving up to 90% efficiency. By producing both electricity and heat from a single source, the CHP unit reduces overall utility costs.

Natural gas heat pumps

Natural gas heat pumps

We’ve installed a natural gas heat pump (GHP) at one of our operations buildings in Leduc. Unlike traditional furnaces, GHPs use natural gas to create space heating at efficiencies over 100%, thanks to their ability to move heat rather than generate it. This advanced technology helps lower overall utility costs.

Solar

Solar PV

We’re installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at our district offices across the province, beginning with Leduc, Athabasca and Stettler. These systems generate electricity onsite, helping to reduce reliance on the electric grid and cut long-term utility costs.
