The Value of Reliable Energy

Understanding your rates for dependable warmth.

Energy You Can Count On: From Pipeline to Payment

Apex Utilities is a natural gas distributor and regulated gas retailer.

As a Distributor:

We own, operate, and maintain the entire pipeline system that delivers energy to the areas we serve.

We also install your gas lines and meters, read your meter, and are your primary contact for gas-related emergencies in the areas we serve. These services are covered by your Distribution Charges that you see on your bill.

As a Regulated Gas Retailer:

We are the default supply provider in the areas we serve. We are required to provide retail service to customers who have not chosen a competitive retailer in our service area. You can choose to purchase your natural gas from us or a competitive retailer. The regulated gas rates we share on this site are approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and appear as Energy Charges on your bill.

You may choose your energy retailer - the company you buy your gas from.

Apex Utilities charges for other business services not included in the Gas Distribution Service rates. These charges are approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission. View the 2026 Special Charges Schedule.

Energy Charges: The Cost of Consumption

There are two fees that make up your energy charge: gas cost and administration fee. The gas cost is the price of the actual natural gas you consume (Rider D). It’s like paying for the fuel in your cars. And just like at the pump, this rate fluctuates based on market conditions. The monthly gas cost rates are regulated by the AUC.

The administration fee covers operational costs of the regulated gas retailer. Discover details on this fee here.

Regulated Gas Cost Rate as of April 01, 2026:

$1.535/GJ

Administrative Fee as of January 01, 2026:

$0.118/Day
The previous regulated gas cost rate (as of March 1, 2026) was $1.751/GJ.

Distribution Charges: The Cost of Delivery

These regulated charges cover the cost of delivering the natural gas safely to your property which includes maintaining the pipelines, infrastructure, and services (like meter reading and emergency response). Think of it as the cost of using the roads, highway, and infrastructure to get to your destination, or the delivery service that brings your online order to your doorstep.

Fixed Delivery Fee:

Covers fixed costs like your meter and a portion of the pipeline network, regardless of how much gas you use. This helps ensure the system is ready when you need it.

Variable Delivery Fee:

A fee per gigajoule (GJ) you use, helping to cover costs that vary with usage, like a portion of system maintenance and operation.

Distribution Riders

Third-Party Transportation (Rider G):

This covers the cost of moving natural gas from the source through pipelines owned and operated by other companies to our distribution system.

Load Balancing Deferral Account Rider (Rider L)

Municipal Fees

Depending on your location, you may be charged a Franchise Fee (Rate Rider A) and/or Property Tax (Rate Rider B). The following rate riders are also approved by the AUC.

Franchise Fee (Rider A):

This is a fee collected on behalf of your municipality for our use of public land to deliver gas services.

Property Tax (Rider B):

This is a municipal tax on our assets that is passed on to customers in that municipality.
