Stay Safe Around Natural Gas
Clear Steps for Everyday Protection.
Know How to Stay Safe With Natural Gas
Like any energy source, natural gas should be taken seriously. Knowing what to look for can help protect you, your family, and your property. These guidelines will help you stay safe at home or at work by helping you recognize the signs of a gas leak, and know what to do in an emergency.
What Is Natural Gas?
Natural gas is a non-toxic, flammable fuel made of hydrocarbon gases. It’s lighter than air and disperses quickly when released. Because it’s naturally odourless, we add a scent (also known as mercaptan) that smells like sulfur or rotten eggs to help you detect it.
Recognize and Respond to a Gas Leak
If you notice a strong odour like sulfur or rotten eggs, it could be a gas leak. Leave the area right away.
Do not use any electrical switches or devices such as cell phones, light switches, flashlights, matches, or lighters. Anything that creates a spark could ignite the gas.
