Our History
Alberta’s Natural Gas Provider for Over 70 Years
Our roots go back to the early 1950s, when a number of small Alberta utilities came together to bring natural gas service to local communities. Over the decades, through acquisitions, growth, and name changes, we’ve continued to expand and evolve — always with the same focus: delivering safe and reliable energy to Albertans.
Timeline of Key Milestones
1951
Alberta Consolidated Gas Ltd. is incorporated, bringing together eight utilities across Alberta, including Athabasca, Calmar, Leduc, Morinville, St. Paul, and Westlock.
1954
Renamed Great Northern Gas Utilities Ltd.
1955
Acquired by Plains-Western Gas & Electric Co. Ltd.
1979–1985
A period of acquisitions and renames, becoming ICG Utilities (Alberta) Ltd.
1987
Expansion continues with the acquisition of Bonnyville Gas Company Ltd.
1991
Acquired by Westcoast Energy Inc. and renamed Centra Gas Alberta Inc.
1998–1999
Acquired by AltaGas Services Inc. and renamed AltaGas Utilities Inc.
2018
AltaGas Utilities Inc. is acquired by AltaGas Canada Inc.
2020
Company becomes Apex Utilities Inc. under TriSummit Utilities Inc.
