Know Your Appliance Type

You may not need to relight all appliances. Many newer appliances use electronic ignition and should restart automatically.

  • In some cases, you may need to reset the appliance by adjusting your thermostat to its lowest setting, then back to the desired temperature, or by resetting the power.
  • Older appliances with a pilot light may require manual relighting.

Steps to Relight Your Appliance

  • Turn off power to any gas-burning appliances with a fan (like your furnace), and set your water heater’s temperature dial to “Summer” or “Vacation” mode.
  • Turn all gas appliance valves to the OFF position.
  • Check the main gas valve near your meter. If it’s closed, use a crescent wrench to turn it open.
  • If your regulator has a plunger, remove the cap and gently pull the plunger out about one inch. It should stay in the pulled-out position.
  • Check for the smell of gas near all gas appliances and piping. If you detect gas or suspect a leak, turn off the appliance or main gas valve and call us right away. We’ll send a technician to inspect your system.
  • Relight appliances following the instructions in your appliance manual or printed directly on the unit.
